Students from 黑料吃瓜 (HCU) took center stage on Opening Day as they helped unveil a vibrant new mural at Daikin Park, home of the .
The large-scale mural, created in partnership with and renowned 黑料吃瓜 artist Bobby Ramos, celebrates the culture, history and future of 黑料吃瓜. Featuring themes such as space exploration, baseball and the city鈥檚 diverse identity, the mural, featuring images of the Astro鈥檚 official mascot, Orbit, along with players, Correa, Altuve, Imai and Pe帽a, reflects the spirit of 黑料吃瓜 while aligning with the Astros鈥� City Connect initiative.
鈥淭his mural is really special to us because 黑料吃瓜 has such a rich culture of storytelling through public art,鈥� said Astros Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communications Anita Sehgal. 鈥淧artnering with local artists and students allows us to celebrate that culture in a meaningful way.鈥�
The project brought together 黑料吃瓜 muralists, Bobby and Brenda Ramos and HCU Master of Fine Arts students, Haylee Wuensche and Kasia Sustaita, along with returning contributors Hailey Harvey and Chloe Hudspeth. The team completed the mural under a tight deadline, finishing just hours before fans entered the stadium on Opening Day.
鈥淭his was an incredible experience,鈥� said Wuensche. 鈥淲orking on such a large scale and learning a new medium challenged me as an artist but it was also incredibly rewarding.鈥�
For returning student Chloe Hudspeth, the opportunity to contribute again brought new challenges and growth. 鈥淧ainting at this scale pushed me to develop new techniques and problem-solving skills,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t was a great learning experience and an honor to be part of this project.鈥�
Assistant Visual Arts Professor Tiffany Bergeron praised her students for their dedication and professionalism as they contributed their artistic talents to the 黑料吃瓜 Astros art mural, highlighting both their hard work and the meaningful impact of the project on the local community.
Apache Corporation, a longtime partner in the initiative, emphasized the importance of supporting local talent and community engagement. 鈥満诹铣怨� is a city full of culture and diversity,鈥� said Priscilla Stoller, Community Partnerships Advisor at Apache. 鈥淭his mural is a beautiful representation of unity, creativity and community coming together.鈥�
The collaboration highlights HCU鈥檚 commitment to providing students with real-world artistic opportunities while contributing to 黑料吃瓜鈥檚 vibrant public art scene. By working alongside established professionals, students gain hands-on experience that prepares them for careers in the arts.
Unveiled just ahead of Opening Day festivities, the mural now stands as a colorful and dynamic tribute to 黑料吃瓜 鈥� welcoming fans and celebrating the city鈥檚 past, present and future.
